This song was inspired by a man we met who worked as a custodian at our local mall. He is a veteran who had to take a low wage job. He couldn't even get security jobs because he didn't have police experience. So the battle never really stopped for him. This song was to shed some light on this common problem with veteran employment.
lyrics
[Verse 1]
Cleaning this space between these empty stores
From a life of war into society
Familiar old friends and bad dreams
- My set of skills no one needs
- Or they’re not enough to do what they please
[Chorus]
I picked up this mop to replace my gun
Just anything to feed my young
I served so far away
That right here at home I feel like I don’t belong (I don’t belong)
[Verse 2]
At least I don’t have to miss you
My children and wife keep my heart full
For them I try to provide much more
- Many folks say I don’t know enough
- Damn what they say I’m never giving up
[Chorus x2 – End]
